Here's what we were working with - a backyard space that had basically been taken over. Dense overgrowth right up against the house, no usable surface, and zero reason to spend time back there. The homeowner wanted something functional and low-maintenance. That's exactly what we set out to build.

Before a single yard of concrete gets poured, the prep work has to be right. We cleared everything out, graded the base, and laid a wire mesh grid across the entire footprint. That reinforcement is what keeps the slab from cracking and shifting over time. It's not glamorous work, but skipping it - or doing it halfway - is how you end up with a patio that fails in a few years.

Once the concrete went down, we finished it with a broom texture and added control joints in a clean grid pattern across the slab. The broom finish gives it traction and a consistent look. The control joints are there to give the concrete a place to expand and contract with Minnesota's freeze-thaw cycles, so the slab stays intact season after season.

What you end up with is a solid, flat surface that connects directly to the existing walkway and sits right off the back door. No more dead space. Just a clean, usable patio that's easy to keep up and actually adds something to the property.

This is a good example of what concrete flatwork can do for a backyard that isn't pulling its weight. The space was always there - it just needed the right foundation to become something worth using.
